Trip to Scotland - Sept 2009 Final thoughts

How would, I sum up my Scottish adventure? In the same way that most religions demand a pilgrimage to certain locations once in a lifetime, I conclude that it is not dissimilar for the enthusiastic motorcyclist to visit Scotland. It was my first trip to this far off land (!) and, until now, I had not even considered it as a location for (serious) biking. No, I had wrongly concluded that, all things great in biking (great roads, good surfaces, limited traffic, an absence of “safety” cameras etc) lay just across the English channel in the land of “La Grenouille” – and even beyond that into southern Europe. But I was wrong.

Putting aside the poor weather yesterday, the route was not one that I would necessarily repeat; doubtless much more fun on a GS1200 or similar, but not ideal for the K1300 GT. If I were planning this trip again I would certainly once again start out at Strathyre but I would stick to the western side up to and perhaps a little beyond Ullapool. I would then explore the area’s roads and views rather than simply cutting a route heading south to north. Having said that, the route taken from Strathyre to Tongue was simply breathtaking. As a motorcyclist, one tends to think of certain stretches of road that were particularly satisfying. However, days 2 and 3 were total sensory overload with an abundance of thrills, challenges and great biking; added to all of this was the most wonderful scenery which, if you then add perfect weather, makes such a trip “as good as it gets”; and it was.

I can think of a number of friends who would have liked to have come on this trip, but, for one reason or other, couldn’t or wouldn’t. However, the camaraderie amongst the many bikers who are there is second to none and, in almost every parking bay there was someone wishing to share his experience of this unspoilt bikers’ paradise.

By the time I arrive back home, I will have covered almost 2000 miles; the GT will be due its 6k service and I will have some lasting memories. I’d like to think I’ll do this trip again someday; however I doubt it’ll be soon but, until then, at least I’ll be able to say, “I did it”.

Post Script : My muscles are aching but my spirits are high; now to plan the next trip ! Oh; here's a final road safety sign in the Isle of Skye ... comments on a postcard please..
